Buying and selling wild-caught hyacinth macaws is illegal. Although it’s legal to trade macaws born in captivity, the birds are notoriously difficult to breed. This has created demand for eggs taken from the wild, which are smuggled from South America to Europe more easily than live birds.
In a sophisticated laundering scheme, traffickers fly the eggs to Europe, incubate them, and pass the live birds off as captive-bred. The only ones that can be traded legally are those born in captivity, which cost at least $10,000. Some fetch several times as much. It’s a high price for a pet bird, but one many are happy to pay. “It’s like with a Porsche,” says German breeder Norbert Hebel. “It’s not about the price—it’s owning one that counts.”
